The sediment sampler was
hammered into the ground under the ice in order to recover sediment
samples. It is here filled with a mixture of mud and ice.
|

|
On the surface of the
slush core something that looks like a pine needle or bark from a tree
was found. Further investigations will show what it actually is and how
old it is, but it could pre-date the built-up of the Greenland ice
sheet. Read the press-release.

People are pulling and pushing to guide
the
3 ton winch up through the narrow passage to the surface from 8 meters
depth.
In the other end, the camp bulldozer is pulling hard.

The empty drill trench. A weird sight
after
8 years of activity.

A closer look of the camp
seen from the other side. In the are the black Main Dome and the red
garage
tent, to the left is the "Lucht kastel" and to the right are the
fuel-line
and the taxiway. The Polar2 plane is on the ground.

The NorthGRIP camp as it
looked on arrival June 24. The snow surface is is now at the level of
2nd floor of
Main Dome, while the Lucht Castle in the background is almost free of
snow
because it was lifted up on surface last year. |

The ceiling is getting low
in the old drill trench which was originally 6 m high. On the floor to
the
right is the cable to the first drill that got stuck half way down in
the
ice in 1997.

The whinch seen from
above. It pulls more than 1.5 tons when the drill is pulled out
of the ice.

Thr logger was the first
instument to enter the bore hole. The logger measures among others
parameters the bore hole temperature, diameter, and inclination. The
switch at the left end is activated when the logger reaches the bottom
of the hole...

|
Happy drillers on duty. A
"run" takes over two hours from the time the drill leaves the surface
until
it is back, so it is nice to have good company.

The drill is on its way
into the borehole.

The chip chamber and the
pump of the drill are filled with slush during the cleaning of the
borehole.

The ice core. It contains
re-frozen bottom water (red due to sediment) and 'pure' clear glacial
ice
(moon shaped).

A pink ice core
containing re-frozen bottom water. The ice contains large amounts of
impurities.
|
|
A cross section of a
pink ice core showing the largest part being re-frozen bottom water.
The half moon
shaped part is Eemian ice. |
|
The crystal structure
of the cross section. The crytals in the pink part of the core show
that freezing proceeded from the edge of the old borehole.
