Daily reports from the NGRIP-camp - week 22, 2003

Monday, May 26st

Daily life

Again a day with good weather. Day temperatures are now 'up' to -16 C while night temperatures are -26 C.

Science

The third and last logging of the borehole has now started. The sonic logging measures how the speed of sound penetrates the ice. The winch is now running on the new winch control and the heated bailer is being assembled.

Logistics

The flags along the skiway have now been placed with high precision and the skiway is getting ready for receiving C130 next week.

Tuesday, May 27th

Daily life

The weather is still very good and a very big group from camp finds work outside today.

Science

The NGRIP borehole is logged again with the optical logger. The temperature-loggers find the old S2 borehole and reopen it. The 200 m hole is logged for temperature.

Logistics

Wednesday, May 28th

Daily life

Good weather again!!

Science

The last logging of the borehole is a logging where the temperature, pressure, diameter, inclination and azimuth of the hole is measured. Samples are also taken from the 'french pit' fot studies of meterorites.

Logistics

To test the quality of the skiway a few small snow cores are drilled from the skiway to test the density of the snow here.

Thursday, May 29th

Daily life

Still good weather. 'Wish lists' for next week with flight connection are being produced.

Science

The last logging is completed and all the logging results are compared and checked.

Logistics

The new skiway is overhauled a last time.

Friday, May 30th

Daily life

Still good weather but thin clouds move in during the evening and covers for the sun eclipse occuring late evening. (early morning).

Science

The meteorit pit projekt is now succesfully completed. All samples have been taken and packed for return to Europe next week.

Logistics

A snow mould is build for the garage tent. The pictures taken before the camp opened show that only the top of the garage tent is above the snow surface. It is in bad need to be moved up on the surface again.

Saturday, May 31st

Daily

Overcast with wind speeds up to 10 knots. It is Saturday so the camp is looking forward to a evening off with good food and some dancing.

Science

Finally a temperature from the loggers: At a depth of 2993 m the temperature is -5.23 degree celsius. This is as expected and confirms that there is basal melting. The drill is lowered down the bore hole for the first time this year. It reaches a depth of 2998 m before the chip chamber is full of ice chips sampled on the way down.

Logistics

The snow mould for the garage tent is ready and the garage tent is emptied so it is ready to be moved - tomorrow??

Sunday, June 1st

Daily life

Good weather again.

Science

The deep drilling today resulted in 25 kg of ice-chips and glycol-slush. The seismic GLATIS station has been check and is performing well. 'Snow' - quakes will be registered during the next months.

Logistics

The garage tent was moved to the new snow mould in only 30 minutes. The whole camp watched the event.
