Monday, June 11th
|
| Daily life |
| The weather is warm, cloudy and blowing. |
| Science |
| The drilling is in a more stable mode, and since the
report last night, 6.29 metres of core has been retrieved.
This brings the total length of core this year up to 13.7 metres. |
| Logistics |
| The visit tomorrow is prepared. The guest are going to stay overnight,
among others also the danish minister for research. Beds are installed and
everything iprepared. |
Tuesday, June 12th
|
| Daily life |
| Today there is a plane to the camp, bringing 30 passengers.
Some people in camp are exchanged, and there are visitors, who is
shown around in the camp. It is a busy day, and time for welcoming
the new people, and saying farewell to the people who are going out
to Sdr. Strømfjord. According to the plan, the visitors are
going to stay overnight, and be taken out by another plane tomorrow,
but the plane has to stay in camp until tomorrow morning (see below). |
| Science |
| Drilling continues, but because of visitors, plane, etc. there
is no report today. |
| Logistics |
| There is soft snow on the runway after the warm weather. During
landing, the plane breaks through the hard surface several places.
After five attempts, the plane decided to stay in camp, and take
off tomorrow morning at 5.30 with the visitors and the NGRIP
passngers. In the meantime the runway is groomed in order to make
it harder. Dinner is prepared for 54 extra persons, instead of the
28 as planned. |

Thursday, June 14th
|
| Daily life |
| After the visits to the camp, and exchange of some of
the people in camp, the new group has to adjust to the life
in the NorthGRIP camp. The weather is beautiful with blue
sky and sunshine. |
| Science |
| The drilling continues slowly. During the day, several
short cores of around 20 cm each are being drilled. Todays
depth is 2957.6 metres. The problem seems to be related to
the ice chips, which pack too hard in the drill - maybe
because of the high temperatures above -10 C in the bottom of the
hole. After dinner, the new drill team discusses the problem. |
| Logistics |
| Today another C130 Hercules plane is visting camp, with fuel and
drill fluid.
|
Friday, June 15th
|
| Daily life |
| Today the weather is nice as yesterday. The new people are getting
adjusted in camp.
|
| Science |
| Todays drilling retrieve around 1.5 metre of ice core. It is decided to
take some samples and do a few measurements along the core in order to be
able to follow the age of the ice being drilled. The sub-surface Science Trench is
prepared for the processing.
|
| Logistics |
| All pallets and drums are removed from the rundway area after yesterdays
plane. |
Saturday, June 16th
|
| Daily life |
| It is a really nice day with temperatures going up to as high as
-12 C, and with sun and no wind, this is summer! The saturday night
dinner is influenced by the new supplies of food to camp. It is days
with many vegetables at the meals!
|
| Science |
Drilling continues slowly, with a daily production of a little more
A team are visting poles around camp in order to measure their position
with GPS (satellites). They get around with skidoos. The previous years,
poles have been placed up to 50 km from the camp. By measuring the position
again after some years, it is possible to determine the ice flow velocity
around NorthGRIP. |
| Logistics |
| The cook's food storage is re-arranged after the new supplies have
arrived.
|
Sunday, June 17th
|
| Daily life |
|
| Science |
| The drilling continues slowly, still with short ice cores. The problems
now seem to be related to the high temperatures at the bottom of the bore
hole. To keep the spirit, the drill team calculates an average daily
production of ice core of 2.6 metres since the start of the drilling.
