Tuesday, July 18th

Daily life
Still windy, but towards evening the wind speeds decrease.
Science
There is not so much tar left in the borehole - but still problems. It is concluded that it must be the high pressure and warm temperatures at the bottom of the borehole that causes the ice chips to sink instead of raising in the borehole liquid. Drill depth: 2846,65 m

Daily life
The highlight today was a wild snowscooter race. While starting a snowscooter the gas trottle was stuck and the scooter moved with full speed in a circle with a radius of 1 km. A trackvehicle tried to catch the wild scooter without luck. A bump released the trottle and the show ended without damage to rider or scooter.

Sunday, July 23rd

Daily life
Science
Today the worst thing possible happened for the drilling: At 6 pm the drill got stuck at a depth of 2930.55 m. During the day the bore hole had been cleaned for ice cuttings, and later an ice core was drilled routinely. During drilling of the second ice core the drill stopped after drilling about 1 m of core, and the drill was stuck. The cable was pulled with a force of almost 2 tons (4400 lbs), but the drill was not released. The drill cable was left overnight with a tension of 1.4 tons (3000 lbs) in the hope that the drill could be recovered before Monday.
