Daily reports from the NGRIP-camp - week 24 year 2000

Monday, June 12th

Daily life
Science
Easy drilling today. There has been a little adjusting and optimizing of the drill, but 35 m's are expected to be drilled today, which is a very good production (145 meters are expected to be drilled every week). Every drilling produces a core of about 3,5 m's length, but as drilling proceeds every run takes longer and longer, as the hole becomes deeper and deeper. At the moment the drill has to be lowered more than 2.1 km in every run!
Logistics
No more boxes available for the packing of the core, but fortunately there will be a plane with fresh supplies within a few days. The skiway is being groomed constantly to be prepared for the heavy planes.

Tuesday, June 13th

Daily life
An exciting day on the ice. The camp received a plane today, and this is always a nice interruption of the daily routine. On these occasions the camp receives new personnel and fresh supplies of food, spare parts and many other things. Last but not least the plane brings mail from home!
Furthermore two reporters from the German "Der Spiegel" visited camp today, and they had a guided tour around the busy camp.
Science
There was no core processing today, but the CFA and the drilling continued without problems. The CFA handled about 20 m's of ice in a day, which is certainly a good. Moreover the seismic station was logged today.
Logistics
The landing of the plane was a very smooth operation. However when taking off JATO's had to be used, so the runway must be thoroughly checked tomorrow.
Two pallets with ice core boxes have been made and is ready to be shipped out with the next plane.

Wednesday, June 14th

Daily life
Today all functions in the camp have been working slowly, due to the new crew. The new people in the camp, must work slowly the first couple of days to avoid height sickness.
The drillers have had some problems with the drill today, but they ended the day with two perfect runs.
Science
Data form the PARCA-automatic weather station have been downloaded.

Two new cutting plans have been proposed and sent to approval.

Thursday, June 15th

Daily life
The new people in the camp have acclimatized and both drilling and work in the science trench are running with full speed again. There has been repairs on the drill today and a little lump of ice in the borehole has been removed.
Science
The measurements performed in the field are very interesting as we now are down in the glacial ice. With the measuring resolution annual variations are detectable in many of the parameters. The spirit in the science trench is high.
Logistics
The planning for the next mission in the coming week has started. How much fuel does the camp need - and how much drill liquid should be included on the C130-Hercules to ensure that the drilling can proceed until 10 July.

Friday, June 16th

Daily life
The weather in camp is just perfect. No wind and up to -10 degrees celsius during day. The two weatherstations placed a few kilometers from the camp are checked.
Science
The data from the weatherstations are downloaded and the batteries are charged.
Logistics
The roof of one of the subsurface trenches has moved and the day is used to support the roof.

Saturday, June 17th

Daily life
Again a perfect day. Good weather, good drilling and good processing in the science trench. It is Saturday evening, so everyone takes a shower. As many of the tasks in camp are done around the clock, this evening is the only one where all can be together.

Sunday, June 18th

Daily life
A slow day in the camp after saturday evening.
Science
All measurements in the science trench have been made without the big events. The seismic station has been checked and data downloaded. Over 500 events have been recorded during the 3 weeks the staion has been operational. From other sources we know that there has been a big earthquake on Island today. This we show up as a strong signal on the NGRIP seismic station.
