Daily reports from the NGRIP-camp - week 22

Monday, May 29th

Daily life
Blue sky, temperatures between -28C during night and -20C at day time.
Science
The measurement of the electrical conductivity of the ice is now working, and it is part of the daily measurements. This measurement can reveal an annual cycle and volcanic eruptions in the ice.
Logistics
The roof in the old drill-trench had to be supported, since it is lowering due to the weight of the new snow on top.

Tuesday, May 30th

Daily life
Today the temperature in all three trench's (drill-, logging-, and science-trench) was measured to -24C. The temperature is slowly raising due to all the activity and we are getting to a more "comfortable" level. It can be quite tough to operate equipment in -30C, sometimes one needs to grab small items, like skrews, with the bare fingers, and that's COLD!
Science
Logistics
There have been disturbances on the radio due to signals from ships - although the closest coast is 300 km's away.

Wednesday, May 31st

Daily life
The weather is still nice, between -37C and -27C with a blue sky and a little wind.
Science
The new CFA (continous flow analysis of chemical species in the ice) has been tested. Processing and cutting of the ice is following the proposed plan, and today 44.5 m's of core were handled.
Logistics

Thursday, June 1st

Daily life
Another day with nice weather, although the wind was somewhat stronger than yesterday. Although today was a holiday in many European countries work continued as every day on the ice.
Science
The new CFA equipment is now part of the routine processing of the core. A new saw had to be adjusted somewhat in order to prepare the samplas for the CFA, so "only" 36.5 m's of ice were processed today.
Logistics

Friday, June 2nd

Daily life
Science
The electrical conductivity measurement, the ECM today measured the transition from the warm Holocene period into the last glacial period. Drilling is now well within the glacial ice.
Logistics

Saturday, June 3rd

Daily life
Science
Ice from the Younger Dryas period (a short cold spell within the transition between the last glacial and the present interglacial) is now being processed.
Logistics

Sunday, June 4th

Daily life
We're approaching summer temperatures, max temperature today was -16C.
